Yesterday, voters chose leaders in races across the country. The Associated Press reported that Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress. Election calls describe the results as votes are counted; state and local officials still complete the canvass and certify official totals.
For autism families, the next question is not which party won. It is whether the people making decisions will listen to autistic people and families about the supports that shape everyday life.
What families need leaders to keep in view
- Education that works for the individual. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act sets requirements for special education and related services for eligible children. Families need teams and decision-makers to take each student’s communication, safety, learning, and support needs seriously.
- Healthcare and coverage families can navigate. For children enrolled in Medicaid, the federal EPSDT benefit covers a broad range of appropriate and medically necessary services under federal guidelines. State implementation and individual eligibility matter, so families need clear information and continuity of care.
- Support beyond the school years. Families continue to need practical caregiver support, respite options, communication access, and meaningful pathways into adulthood, including community participation and employment.
- Accessible civic life. The Department of Justice says state and local governments must give people with disabilities a full and equal opportunity to vote. That commitment should also show up in accessible public meetings, clear information, and ways for people with different communication needs to be heard.
Our voices belong in the decisions
Election Day may be over, but advocacy continues. Autistic people should be included directly, with the communication supports they choose. Parents and caregivers can share what is working, name the barriers they face, and ask elected officials how they will measure progress on education, healthcare, and community supports.
At TruBlu Brotherz, we believe our community deserves more than a mention during campaign season. Autism families belong in the conversation whenever decisions are made about our lives.
