Imagine having your future predicted before you have a chance to discover what you can do. For Dominic Altmeier of Midland, Michigan, professionals once assumed he might not finish high school and predicted he could need a group home. They underestimated him.
Dominic graduated from high school, attended college, found competitive employment, and became an active, valued member of his community. His story is not a checklist for what success should look like. It is a life shaped by his interests, relationships, work, service, and the support that helped him pursue his own path.
Finding his voice through music
Dominic’s love of singing began in high school. Today, he sings bass with the Midland Center for the Arts Chorale. Music gives him a calming activity, builds confidence, and creates a way to connect with other people.
Turning grief into service
Dominic’s grandfather was a loving mentor and father figure in his life. After his grandfather died, Dominic and his mother Wendy turned to The Children’s Grief Center for support. The help Dominic received through the center later inspired him to volunteer there, supporting other families who are navigating grief.
He also volunteers at his Unitarian Universalist fellowship, where he welcomes people and helps with coffee and cleanup. That community offered connection and care during a painful time; volunteering has given Dominic another way to build friendships and find purpose.
Speaking up for autism acceptance
Dominic participates in local disability-focused events and posts on social media to challenge misconceptions about autism. The low expectations once placed on him are part of the story—but they do not define its ending.
His journey also reflects the importance of support. His mother advocated for his education and services early and continues to provide practical encouragement. Dominic’s experiences remind us that autonomy, meaningful support, and the freedom to follow an individual path can exist together.
A TruBlu Hero—and one of thousands
At TruBlu Brotherz, we are proud of our autism community. We recognize Dominic as one of our TruBlu Heroes, and celebrate the thousands of autistic people making a difference every day—in homes, schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and communities around the world.
Every autistic person has different abilities, needs, and aspirations. Their lives do not have to look alike to matter. Dominic, thank you for reminding the world that every individual has something meaningful to contribute. We see you, we celebrate you, and your story deserves to be told.
“Autism is part of someone’s story. It should never be used to write the ending.”
